As people, we have our individual definition of success. The world at large has its perceptions and definitions for success. It could be in the area of financial success, educational success, material success etc. We have also adjudged success based on what our environment has conditioned us as the true definition of success. Our environment entails our family, friends, educational background, church and other close affiliations not excluding the almighty social media!
A lot of issues being experienced in the world today is as result of our pursuit for ‘success’.
People do all manner of things, go to any extent all in the bid to attain success. This desire for success has led to a lot of people manipulating, killing, extorting and engaging in many dangerous activities. Even in the work environment, in a bid to climb the career ladder, we lose our humane tendencies, malign and backbite colleagues, we stomp on people feelings while trying to reach that ‘success’ ladder.
I have learned that to be ‘happy’, ‘sane’ and be mentally stable, I will have to redefine my definition of success. I have also learned that being successful does not necessarily mean achieving that ultimate goal in financial independence, educational heights, getting that huge material resources that I have longed for or reaching the highest point of my career ladder. Rather, success is seen in my day to day living!
Success is waking up each day to behold another opportunity to live and thrive! Success is the ability to eat, laugh, breath and move! Success is in the ability to solve the ‘little’ problems that come up in my home like coordinating the children, cooking and sorting out the bills. I see success in resolving office issues, attending meetings and meeting deadlines!
I am not discounting the importance of achieving big goals, long term objectives etc.
I have only learned to appreciate the successes I achieve in my way through life. Having good friends, supportive family, sane environment and even the opportunity to sleep and wake up on my bed is success for me!
Ultimately, I have faith that God is with me and that as I keep trusting in him, little by little I will finally get to my big goals…. and you know what….another goal is set…success steps continues!
